Gilbert Price, 48, who was nominated for Tony Awards four times, was found dead Jan. 2 in Vienna. The cause of death was not known, but Price had diabetes for many years.
He made a promising debut on Broadway, singing “Feeling Good” in “The Roar Of The Greasepaint – The Smell Of The Crowd” in 1965. The previous year he had appeared in Langston Hughes’ “Jerico-Jim Crow” off-Broadway, winning the Theater World Annual Award. Price was a protege of Hughes, who had seen him in the musical “Fly Blackbird.”

His Tony nominations were for “Lost In The Stars,” “The Night That Made America Famous,” “1600 Pennsylvania Avenue” and “Timbuktu.” He also appeared in tv variety shows and in regional and foreign productions. In recent years Price had difficulty finding acting jobs in the U.S. He was in Vienna conducting a singing and acting workshop.
Price graduated from Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn in 1960. A fellow student there was Barbra Streisand.
Survived by his father, Leon, and a sister.
