Spring is in full swing. For many households across the country it's high time to thoroughly dust and declutter โ€” especially after spending most of last year indoors.

Your spring cleaning plan may include donating or selling old clothing and other soft goods, but how about that mounting pile of unused electronics? The tech world unveils new releases and upgrades at a feverish pace, and tossing electronics in the trash isn't good for the environment. So how can you safely liquidate those previous-gen iPhones collecting dust in your drawer?

Enter the Amazon Trade-In program, which allows shoppers to browse and send in thousands of eligible items in exchange for a gift card they can use throughout the website. There are also discounts for customers who upgrade to new Amazon devices.

The Amazon Trade-In program is a quick, easy way to offload unused electronics, but is it worth it for you? We break it all down below.

How the Amazon Trade-In program works

Visit the Amazon Trade-In program page and browse thousands of eligible items for exchange. Once you've found the product you'd like to trade in, you'll be prompted to answer some basic questions regarding the current condition of the device.

By filling in this information, you'll see the highest trade-in value of your used product, but it'll still have to be evaluated once Amazon receives it before officially becoming eligible for trade-in. You'll have the option to accept the adjusted value โ€” which may be significantly lower โ€” or simply return your device for recycling.

Naturally, products in near-new or excellent condition will result in the highest payouts in the form of an Amazon gift card. When submitting your electronic device for evaluation, be as detailed and honest as possible to receive the most accurate value for your item.

The online application takes a couple of minutes to complete. From there, Amazon will provide you with a free UPS shipping label. Amazon covers all shipping costs, even if your item is returned but not accepted for trade-in. Of course, make sure your device is completely wiped of your personal information and restored to factory settings before mailing it.

It may take up to 10 days for your device to reach Amazon. Once Amazon receives and appraises your product, you'll get an email within two days informing you of its trade-in status. If accepted, your gift card balance will show a deposit for the finalized value of the item. If you don't agree with what Amazon finds, the online retailer will send it back, free of charge.

If you live near a participating uBreakiFix location, you can trade in an old device or drop off a trade-in you already submitted online. You'll immediately receive an Amazon gift card for a qualifying item.

Additional perks for upgrading to Amazon devices

If you're itching to get rid of an old Amazon Kindle or Amazon Echo, you can bypass the online questionnaire and shipping labels by taking it to a qualifying Amazon specialty retail location.

You can bring your used Amazon device to participating Amazon Books and 4 Star stores for an appraisa. Instead of an Amazon gift card, you'll receive store credit.

Whether you make a trade online or in-store, upgrade to a new Amazon device and receive a discount up to a 25% off. (Your trade-in product does not have to be an Amazon device.) This is an excellent way to score a deal for a brand new Fire TV Stick 4K or Ring Video Doorbell.

Is the Amazon Trade-In program worth it for you?

For a quick, easy way to offload unused electronics, it's hard to go wrong with the Amazon Trade-In program. The discounts for Amazon device upgrades are a nice bonus.

However, it's not necessarily a money-maker, especially for a lot of older tech items. There's also the caveat of your funds being tied to your Amazon account. Also, remember that Amazon's appraisal is the final word on how much your device will ultimately fetch.

If making money from your unused electronics is top priority, take to an online marketplace, like OfferUp or Facebook Marketplace, and sell them yourself. If you simply want to remove that pile of aging tech from your dresser as soon as possible, then leave it to Amazon.
